Marawi Schools Get a Boost: President Marcos Jr. Launches Starlink Internet Connectivity

Marawi City, Philippines – In a significant move to bridge the digital divide and enhance education in conflict-affected areas, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially launched Starlink internet connectivity in temporary learning spaces (TLS) in Marawi City. The initiative, demonstrated on June 23rd at Barangay Sagonsongan, marks a crucial step towards providing students with access to online learning resources and opportunities.
The President personally tested the Starlink system, showcasing its capabilities to eager learners. The installation of Starlink represents a vital lifeline for schools in Marawi, many of which have struggled with limited or unreliable internet access, hindering educational progress. Prior to this, students and teachers faced significant challenges in accessing online learning platforms, research materials, and essential communication tools.
“This is a great opportunity for our students in Marawi to have access to the internet and learn more,” stated a teacher at one of the TLS. “It will allow us to broaden our teaching methods and provide our students with a more engaging and enriching learning experience.”
Starlink, a satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX, offers high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity even in remote and underserved areas. Its deployment in Marawi is part of the government's broader efforts to improve internet infrastructure across the Philippines, particularly in regions that have been historically disadvantaged.
The launch of Starlink in Marawi comes at a critical time, as the education sector continues to adapt to the evolving demands of the digital age. The availability of reliable internet access will not only benefit students but also empower teachers with the tools they need to deliver quality education. It also supports ongoing recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the city following the 2017 siege.
President Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of digital inclusion in his remarks, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of their location, has access to the benefits of the digital economy. This is a key priority for our administration.”
The government is exploring further expansion of Starlink connectivity to other schools and communities in Mindanao and across the country. This initiative underscores the administration's dedication to leveraging technology to improve the lives of Filipinos and build a more equitable and prosperous nation. The project is expected to significantly impact the educational landscape in Marawi, fostering a brighter future for its youth and contributing to the city’s long-term recovery.
