EDSA Rehab Ahead: Senator Villanueva Urges Flexible Work Options to Beat Traffic
Manila Bulletin

As the highly anticipated rehabilitation of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) looms in June, Senator Joel Villanueva is proactively urging both private companies and government agencies to adopt flexible work arrangements. His call aims to mitigate the inevitable traffic congestion expected during the construction period, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters and the overall economy.

Villanueva emphasized the potential benefits of flexible work setups, such as remote work, staggered work hours, and compressed workweeks. He believes these options can significantly reduce the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours, easing the burden on EDSA and its surrounding areas.

“Ang EDSA ay ugat ng ating transportasyon. Kailangan nating maging handa sa mga pagbabago at maghanap ng mga paraan upang mabawasan ang abala sa ating mga kababayan,” Villanueva stated. (EDSA is the backbone of our transportation. We need to be prepared for the changes and find ways to minimize inconvenience for our people.)

The senator highlighted that flexible work arrangements are not only beneficial during the EDSA rehabilitation but can also contribute to long-term improvements in productivity, employee morale, and environmental sustainability. He pointed out that many companies have already successfully implemented these setups, demonstrating their feasibility and effectiveness.

Addressing Concerns and Incentives

Villanueva acknowledged potential concerns from employers regarding the implementation of flexible work options. He suggested that the government could provide incentives, such as tax breaks or subsidies, to encourage companies to adopt these arrangements.

“We can explore providing financial assistance to companies that embrace flexible work, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This will help them overcome any initial costs and demonstrate the value of these setups,” he explained.

Furthermore, he urged government agencies to lead by example, implementing flexible work policies for their own employees. This would not only reduce traffic congestion but also showcase the government’s commitment to modern and efficient work practices.

EDSA Rehabilitation: A Necessary but Challenging Undertaking

The EDSA rehabilitation project is deemed crucial for improving the road's infrastructure and alleviating long-term traffic problems. However, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has warned that the construction period will inevitably cause significant traffic disruptions.

The project involves repairing damaged pavement, improving drainage systems, and expanding sidewalks. It is expected to take several months to complete, potentially impacting the daily commute of millions of Filipinos.

Senator Villanueva’s call for flexible work arrangements is a proactive measure aimed at minimizing the negative impacts of the EDSA rehabilitation. By encouraging employers and government agencies to embrace these options, he hopes to ease traffic congestion, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life for Filipino commuters.

“Let’s work together to make the EDSA rehabilitation a success, minimizing the inconvenience and maximizing the benefits for all Filipinos,” Villanueva concluded.
