DILG Sec. Remulla Apologizes for Class Suspension Announcement Controversy: 'I was just trying to help'
Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin 'Benhur' Abalos Jr. has addressed the widespread criticism and confusion surrounding his recent suggestion for a class suspension due to the intense heat being experienced across the Philippines. In a statement released earlier today, Secretary Remulla expressed regret for the misinterpretation of his intentions, stating, “I was just trying to help.”
The controversy erupted after Remulla publicly advocated for a temporary suspension of face-to-face classes, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of students given the soaring temperatures. While his intention was to protect young learners from heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses, his remarks were met with a wave of backlash from parents, educators, and even other government officials who argued that suspending classes would disrupt learning and disproportionately affect students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“I understand the concerns raised, and I sincerely apologize if my statement caused confusion or distress,” Remulla said. “My sole purpose was to highlight the potential risks posed by the extreme heat and to explore all possible measures to ensure the safety of our students. I did not intend to dictate policy or undermine the authority of the Department of Education (DepEd).”
He further explained that his suggestion was based on reports of students experiencing heat exhaustion and the potential for more severe health complications. “We have seen instances of students needing medical attention due to the heat, and we cannot afford to be complacent,” he emphasized.
The DepEd, led by Vice President Sara Duterte, has maintained its stance against widespread class suspensions, opting instead for localized assessments and adjustments to class schedules based on the specific needs of each school and community. DepEd has advised schools to implement heat mitigation strategies such as providing shaded areas, ensuring access to water, and adjusting physical activities.
Secretary Remulla acknowledged the DepEd's authority and affirmed his support for their strategies. “We respect the DepEd’s decision and will continue to coordinate with them to address the challenges posed by the heat,” he stated. “Our goal is the same: to protect our students and ensure that they receive a quality education in a safe and healthy environment.”
The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the government's preparedness for climate change impacts and the need for more proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children, from extreme weather events. It also highlights the importance of clear communication and coordination between government agencies when addressing public concerns.
Ultimately, Secretary Remulla’s apology underscores his commitment to serving the Filipino people and his willingness to learn from past mistakes. He reiterated his dedication to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to find solutions that prioritize the safety and well-being of students across the nation.
