Kuala Lumpur, May 27 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the critical need for a strengthened partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in light of the current global economic uncertainties. Speaking at the second Asean-GCC Summit today, Anwar highlighted the potential for mutually beneficial collaboration to foster economic resilience and stability.

The summit, a significant platform for dialogue and cooperation, brought together leaders from Asean member states and GCC countries to explore avenues for deepening economic, trade, and investment ties. Anwar's remarks underscored Malaysia's commitment to fostering closer relationships within the region and beyond, particularly in a climate marked by fluctuating markets and geopolitical challenges.

“The current global economic landscape is characterised by volatility and uncertainty. Strengthening our ties with the GCC is not merely desirable, but vital for both Asean and GCC nations to weather these challenges effectively,” Anwar stated. He pointed to the vast potential for increased trade, investment, and technological exchange between the two blocs, noting that a stronger partnership could contribute significantly to regional economic growth and diversification.

Focus on Key Areas of Cooperation

Prime Minister Anwar specifically highlighted several key areas of cooperation that could be prioritised to maximize the benefits of the Asean-GCC partnership. These include:

• Investment Opportunities: Attracting greater foreign direct investment (FDI) into both regions through the creation of a conducive and transparent investment climate. Malaysia, with its strategic location and skilled workforce, is keen to attract GCC investments in sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, and manufacturing.
• Trade Diversification: Exploring new avenues for trade diversification beyond traditional commodities. This involves identifying opportunities for collaboration in high-value sectors like halal products, pharmaceuticals, and tourism.
• Financial Cooperation: Strengthening financial cooperation to enhance stability and promote sustainable development. This could involve exploring joint initiatives to manage risks and promote financial inclusion.
• Digital Economy: Collaborating on the development of the digital economy, including initiatives to promote e-commerce, fintech, and cybersecurity.
• Human Capital Development: Facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise to enhance human capital development in both regions.
