Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a display of confidence and regional solidarity, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) possesses the resilience and fortitude to withstand the increasing geopolitical volatility impacting the global landscape. The statement was made during the ongoing ASEAN Summit, where leaders are convening to discuss pressing regional and international challenges.

Addressing the summit, Anwar emphasized ASEAN's unique position and capabilities in navigating the complexities of the current world order. He characterized the geopolitical tensions as stemming from a confluence of factors, including rising great power competition and evolving security threats. However, he maintained that ASEAN’s collective strength, rooted in its principles of non-interference, consensus-building, and peaceful resolution of disputes, equips the bloc to effectively manage these challenges.

“ASEAN has consistently proven its ability to adapt and respond to crises, and I am confident that we can continue to do so in the face of these new uncertainties,” Anwar stated. “Our focus remains on fostering economic growth, strengthening regional cooperation, and upholding the rule of law.”

Focus on Economic Resilience and Strategic Partnerships

Beyond simply weathering the storm, Anwar highlighted the importance of proactive measures to enhance ASEAN’s economic resilience. He advocated for deeper integration within the region, promoting trade and investment, and fostering innovation. Furthermore, he stressed the need to forge strategic partnerships with external stakeholders who share ASEAN’s commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity.

“We must ensure that ASEAN remains a vibrant and attractive destination for investment, while also safeguarding our interests and values,” Anwar explained. “This requires a balanced approach – engaging with the world while maintaining our autonomy and independence.”

Addressing Regional Concerns

The ASEAN Summit is also expected to address several specific regional concerns, including the ongoing situation in Myanmar, maritime security in the South China Sea, and the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State. Anwar reiterated ASEAN’s commitment to finding peaceful and sustainable solutions to these challenges, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

“We must continue to work together to promote stability and security in our region, ensuring that all our member states can thrive and prosper,” Anwar concluded. “ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity and its commitment to shared values – values that will guide us as we navigate the complexities of the 21st century.”
