GEORGE TOWN, May 21 – Penang state authorities are contemplating a stringent measure: a complete prohibition on vape sales within the state. This potential move comes as a response to concerns that the anticipated federal anti-smoking law might not be sufficient to effectively curb the rising popularity of vaping, particularly among young people.

According to Penang’s Executive Councillor (Exco) for Health, Welfare and Caring Society, the state government is closely monitoring the implementation of the upcoming federal legislation. The law, designed to outlaw smoking and vaping for those born after 2007, aims to prevent the next generation from becoming addicted to nicotine. However, there's a growing apprehension that the law's impact may be limited, necessitating additional measures at the state level.

“We are watching the situation closely,” stated the Exco. “If the federal law proves inadequate in reducing vape usage, Penang will not hesitate to implement a total ban on vape sales. The health and well-being of our citizens, especially our youth, are our top priority.”

The potential ban would encompass all forms of vape products, including e-cigarettes, e-liquids, and related accessories. Enforcement would likely involve collaboration between state health officials and local authorities.
