Capital Pride, Ottawa’s annual celebration of the LGBTQ2S+ community, has quietly removed a statement expressing solidarity with Palestine from its website. The original statement, posted on Capital Pride’s website last month, voiced support for Palestinians and condemned the ongoing conflict. Masha Davidovic, a member of Queers for Palestine – Ottawa, believes the Pride movement is inherently political. “Many of our community members live at the intersection of different identities,” she stated. “For many queer and trans Palestinians, the struggle for LGBTQ2S+ rights is inseparable from the struggle for national liberation. To ignore the Palestinian plight is to silence a vital part of our community.”

However, others argued that Capital Pride should remain focused on LGBTQ2S+ issues and avoid taking stances on international conflicts. They raised concerns about the potential impact on fundraising and participation in Pride events, particularly given the increasingly polarized political climate.

While we understand the concerns about division, we believe that standing in solidarity with marginalized communities, including Palestinians, is consistent with our values of inclusivity and liberation.”

The removal of the statement has left many in the LGBTQ2S+ community questioning the future direction of Capital Pride and its commitment to social justice.
