In a deeply personal journey, a Charlotte nonprofit director is channeling a near-death experience into a passionate mission: improving Black maternal health outcomes in the region. Since 2023, her organization, the Women's Empowerment and Birth Equity Institute (WEBEI), has been working tirelessly to address the systemic disparities that disproportionately impact Black women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

The director's own harrowing experience – nearly losing her life after giving birth – served as a stark wake-up call. It underscored the urgent need for culturally competent care, increased access to resources, and a supportive community for Black mothers. "It was a life-altering moment," she shared. "I realized that my experience wasn't unique, and that many Black women face similar challenges and risks within the healthcare system."

WEBEI is dedicated to empowering Black women throughout their entire maternal journey. The institute offers a range of services, including educational workshops, doula support, advocacy, and access to vital resources. They focus on providing culturally sensitive information about prenatal care, labor and delivery options, breastfeeding, and postpartum mental health.

Addressing Systemic Disparities

The organization recognizes that the challenges Black women face are often rooted in systemic inequities. Factors such as implicit bias among healthcare providers, lack of access to quality healthcare in underserved communities, and historical trauma contribute to poorer maternal health outcomes. WEBEI actively works to dismantle these barriers through advocacy and partnerships with healthcare providers and community organizations.

Empowering Black Mothers Through Education and Support

Central to WEBEI's mission is empowering Black women with the knowledge and support they need to navigate the complexities of pregnancy and childbirth. Their workshops cover a wide range of topics, from understanding medical terminology to advocating for their needs during labor. They also provide access to certified doulas who offer emotional and physical support throughout the entire process.

A Community-Driven Approach

WEBEI emphasizes a community-driven approach, recognizing that Black mothers often thrive within supportive networks. The institute fosters connections among Black women, creating spaces for sharing experiences, building relationships, and accessing peer support. They also collaborate closely with local community organizations to ensure that their services are accessible and responsive to the needs of the community.
