Vatican City – In a deeply moving encounter, Pope Francis met with refugees displaced from the Chagos Islands, delivering a powerful message of solidarity and advocating for the rights of the vulnerable against the influence of powerful nations. The audience, held Saturday at the Vatican, underscored the Pope's unwavering commitment to human dignity and his vocal criticism of injustices affecting marginalized communities worldwide.

The Chagos Islands, a remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean, have been at the center of a decades-long dispute. Originally part of Mauritius, the islands were detached in 1965 and subsequently leased to the United Kingdom, primarily for the establishment of a US military base on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the group. The indigenous population, numbering around 2,000, were forcibly evicted in the 1970s to make way for the base, a relocation that has been widely condemned as a human rights violation.

“The suffering of the Chagos Islanders is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences when power is prioritized over the rights of individuals and communities,” Pope Francis stated during the audience. “We must never forget that true strength lies not in dominion, but in compassion and justice.” He emphasized the moral imperative to address the historical injustices suffered by the islanders and to ensure their right to return to their ancestral homeland.

The refugees, many of whom have lived in exile for over half a century, shared their personal stories of displacement, loss, and the ongoing struggle for recognition and redress. Pope Francis’s intervention comes at a crucial time. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2019 ruled that the UK’s administration of the Chagos Islands was illegal, and the UN General Assembly subsequently called for the UK to return the islands to Mauritius. However, the UK government has yet to fully comply with these international legal decisions, citing strategic interests related to the US military base.

The Pope’s words are expected to amplify the voices of the Chagos Islanders and put further pressure on the UK government to take concrete steps towards resolving the dispute. He urged international leaders to prioritize human rights and international law over political expediency and to work towards a just and lasting solution that respects the dignity and rights of all involved.
