Feeling Stressed? Kiwi Experts Back Tapping (EFT) for Mental Wellbeing

Life in Aotearoa can be pretty hectic, right? Between work, family, and everything else, stress and anxiety can really take a toll. But what if there was a simple, accessible technique you could use to help manage those feelings? Enter Tapping Therapy, also known as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
What is Tapping?
Tapping is a fascinating blend of ancient acupressure and modern psychology. It involves gently tapping on specific meridian points on your body – think of them as energy pathways – while focusing on a particular emotion or issue you're dealing with. Sounds a bit out there, maybe? But hear us out!
How Does It Work?
The theory behind Tapping is that negative emotions are caused by disruptions in our body's energy system. By tapping on these meridian points, you're essentially releasing those blockages and restoring balance. It’s like hitting the reset button for your nervous system.
Why Are Experts Taking Notice?
It's not just a woo-woo trend. Increasingly, mental health professionals in New Zealand and around the world are recognising the potential benefits of EFT. While more research is always needed, studies have shown promising results in easing stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Kiwi GPs are even starting to incorporate it into their practice!
The Evidence: What Does the Research Say?
Research suggests Tapping can help with:
- Reducing Stress and Anxiety: Tapping activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “rest and digest” response, helping to calm you down.
- Easing PTSD Symptoms: By gently processing traumatic memories, Tapping can help reduce flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety associated with PTSD.
- Managing Phobias: Tapping can desensitize you to feared stimuli, making it easier to cope with phobias.
- Improving Sleep: Reducing anxiety and stress naturally leads to better sleep.
How to Get Started with Tapping
The good news? You can learn the basics of Tapping online! There are tons of free resources available on YouTube and EFT websites. Here’s a simple sequence to try:
- Identify the Issue: What are you feeling stressed or anxious about?
- The Karate Chop: Tap on the fleshy part of your hand while saying, “Even though I feel [emotion], I deeply and completely accept myself.” Repeat three times.
- Tap on the Meridian Points: Using your fingertips, tap on the following points about 5-7 times each, while repeating a reminder phrase (e.g., “Even though I feel anxious about [situation], I deeply and completely accept myself”):
- Eyebrow
- Side of the Eye
- Under the Eye
- Under the Nose
- Chin
- Collarbone
- Under the Arm
- Top of the Head
- Take a Deep Breath: Notice how you feel.
Important Note: Tapping is a complementary therapy and shouldn’t replace professional mental health care. If you’re struggling with significant mental health issues, please reach out to a doctor or therapist.
