Imo Health Chief Dismisses Diphtheria Death Rumours: Reassures Public
Daily Post Nigeria

Owerri, Nigeria – Concerns surrounding the spread of diphtheria in Imo State have been allayed by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Egu, who has strongly refuted recent social media reports claiming a further death attributed to the disease. In a press briefing held earlier today, Dr. Egu addressed the circulating information, emphasizing that it is inaccurate and aims to create unnecessary panic among the populace.

“We’ve been made aware of reports circulating online alleging another death linked to diphtheria,” stated Dr. Egu. “I want to be absolutely clear: these reports are false. Our health officials have thoroughly investigated these claims and found no evidence to support them. We understand that misinformation can spread rapidly, particularly on social media, and we are taking steps to counter it effectively.”

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the nose and throat. It can cause severe illness, including breathing difficulties, heart failure, and nerve damage. While Imo State has seen cases of diphtheria in the past, the state government has been actively working to prevent its spread through vaccination campaigns and public awareness initiatives.

Ongoing Vaccination Efforts and Public Health Measures

Dr. Egu highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat diphtheria, stressing the importance of vaccination as the most effective preventative measure. “We are continuing our vaccination programmes, targeting vulnerable populations, particularly children under the age of five and those who haven’t been vaccinated before,” she explained. “We urge all parents and guardians to ensure their children are up-to-date with their vaccinations. Diphtheria vaccination is readily available at public health facilities across the state.”

The Ministry of Health is also intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the symptoms of diphtheria and how to prevent its spread. These campaigns involve community outreach programmes, radio announcements, and partnerships with local media outlets. Key preventative measures include practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, and seeking medical attention immediately if any symptoms of diphtheria are observed.

Addressing the Source of Misinformation

Dr. Egu expressed concern over the source of the misleading information and stated that the ministry is working to identify and address the origins of these false reports.
