KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's impressive trade figures for 2023, initially hailed as a significant economic milestone, may be largely attributed to a single, substantial transaction, according to Sabah’s Industrial Development Minister, Phoong Jin Zhe. While the state recorded an unexpectedly high trade volume, the minister cautions against interpreting this as a widespread surge in economic activity.

Speaking to reporters, Phoong explained that a thorough analysis revealed a single, large-scale deal significantly inflated the overall trade numbers. This deal, while positive for the state’s revenue, doesn't necessarily reflect the broader trends in Sabah's industrial sector or overall economic performance.

“We need to be careful in drawing conclusions from these figures,” Phoong stated. “While the number itself is encouraging, it's crucial to understand the underlying factors. A single, significant transaction can skew the data and provide a misleading picture of the state’s economic health.”

The Sabah government is currently conducting a deeper dive into the trade data to identify the specific transaction responsible for the spike and to gain a more accurate understanding of the state’s trade dynamics. Despite the clarification regarding the one-off deal, Phoong remains optimistic about Sabah’s long-term economic prospects. The state is actively pursuing strategies to attract foreign investment, promote local industries, and diversify its economy. Key initiatives include streamlining business processes, improving infrastructure, and fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship.
