Kuala Lumpur, May 9 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his warmest congratulations to the Catholic community in Malaysia and globally on the historic election of Pope Leo XIV. In a statement released earlier today, Anwar expressed optimism that the new pontiff's leadership will foster greater understanding and collaboration between different faiths and cultures, particularly emphasizing shared values that resonate across communities.

“The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church and indeed, for the world. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness and to all Catholics, both here in Malaysia and across the globe,” said the Prime Minister. “This is a time for renewed hope and a reaffirmation of the values of peace, compassion, and justice that are central to the Catholic faith and increasingly vital in our interconnected world.”

Malaysia, known for its multicultural and multi-religious society, has long enjoyed a harmonious relationship between different faith groups. Anwar underscored the importance of maintaining this spirit of respect and tolerance, noting that the values championed by Pope Leo XIV align strongly with Malaysia's commitment to inclusivity and understanding.

“The principles of Pope Leo XIV, emphasizing dialogue, empathy, and service to others, are principles that we in Malaysia deeply value. We believe that interfaith dialogue and cooperation are essential for building a more peaceful and prosperous future for all,” Anwar added. He further expressed his willingness to engage with the Vatican and explore avenues for strengthening ties between Malaysia and the Catholic Church.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the significant contribution of the Catholic community to Malaysia's social and economic development. Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable organizations have played a vital role in providing education, healthcare, and support to vulnerable populations, contributing to the nation’s progress.

“The Catholic community in Malaysia is a valued and integral part of our nation. Their dedication to education, healthcare, and social welfare has enriched our society immeasurably,” Anwar stated. “I am confident that under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, the Catholic Church will continue to be a force for good in the world, promoting peace, justice, and the common good.”

The statement concluded with Anwar wishing Pope Leo XIV a long and fruitful papacy, and reiterating Malaysia’s commitment to fostering a society where people of all faiths can coexist peacefully and contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

The election of Pope Leo XIV has been met with widespread acclaim and anticipation, with many hoping that his leadership will address pressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. Malaysia stands ready to collaborate with the Vatican and the Catholic Church in these efforts, working towards a more just and sustainable world for all.
