PM Anwar: Peaceful Protests Allowed Near Parliament, As Long as Roads Remain Open
PUTRAJAYA, August 22 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has affirmed the government’s stance on peaceful gatherings, stating that demonstrations can continue near Parliament as long as they do not obstruct access roads. This decision comes after a proposal to relocate such gatherings to Padang Merbok, a nearby public square, was considered.
Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya, Anwar clarified that the government respects the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. However, he emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety and minimizing disruption to daily life. Blocking entry roads to Parliament, he stated, is unacceptable.
“The proposal to move the gatherings to Padang Merbok was discussed, but we decided that it is permissible for peaceful gatherings to take place near Parliament, provided that the roads leading to Parliament are not blocked,” Anwar explained. “We need to balance the right to protest with the need to maintain order and ensure smooth traffic flow.”
