New Delhi: India has strongly rebuked the United States and the European Union for what it calls an “unjustified” targeting of its oil purchases from Russia. In a sharp response on Monday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) accused Washington and Brussels of singling out India due to its continued sourcing of Russian crude, a move New Delhi deems both unfair and detrimental to its energy security.

The statement comes amidst increasing pressure from Western nations to curtail reliance on Russian energy following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. While many countries have significantly reduced or eliminated their Russian oil imports, India has maintained a considerable level of procurement, taking advantage of discounted prices offered by Russia.

“We see targeting of India on account of our energy needs and oil purchases from Russia as unjustified,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated. “Our energy needs are legitimate and we are committed to fulfilling them in a responsible manner.” He emphasized that India’s oil imports constitute a relatively small percentage of global trade and that the country is actively exploring diverse energy sources.

Balancing Energy Security and Global Concerns

India’s position reflects a complex balancing act between its own energy security requirements and the broader geopolitical landscape. As a rapidly developing economy with a massive population, India's energy demands are substantial and continue to grow.
