Toronto Family Battles GoFundMe Organizer After Funeral Funds Misused for Gambling
A Toronto man is embroiled in a heartbreaking dispute with a GoFundMe organizer after the funds raised for his brother's funeral were allegedly gambled away. Allan Oliver, still grieving the sudden loss of his younger brother last year, was initially relieved when a family friend, identified as Michelle Harkness, created a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the funeral expenses.
“My first thought was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing, people are willing to help,’” Oliver told the Toronto Star. The campaign quickly gained traction, raising over $13,000 from generous donors who wanted to support the family during their time of need. However, Oliver’s relief soon turned to dismay when he realized the money wasn't being used as intended.
Harkness, who was responsible for managing the funds, allegedly began using the money for personal expenses, including gambling. Oliver claims he became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies and a lack of transparency in how the funds were being handled. Attempts to discuss the matter with Harkness proved fruitless, leading Oliver to file a formal complaint with GoFundMe and subsequently with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
“I’ve been chasing her for months,” Oliver stated. “I’ve been trying to get my brother’s money back.” The situation has added another layer of emotional distress to an already difficult time for Oliver and his family. The family is now facing the prospect of covering funeral costs again, despite the significant amount of money raised through GoFundMe.
GoFundMe has confirmed they are investigating the situation. A spokesperson for the platform stated, “We take these matters extremely seriously and are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We are in contact with all parties involved and are committed to ensuring that funds raised for memorial purposes are used appropriately.” The company has paused Harkness's account and is working to recover the funds.
The OPP has also launched an investigation into Harkness, who is facing potential charges of fraud over $5,000. Harkness, through her lawyer, has denied the allegations, claiming she used the funds responsibly and that Oliver is attempting to defame her.
This case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in online fundraising platforms. While GoFundMe provides a valuable service for those in need, it also underscores the potential for misuse and the need for robust safeguards to protect donors and recipients. The Oliver family’s experience serves as a cautionary tale and a reminder to carefully vet those entrusted with managing charitable funds.
The legal proceedings are ongoing, and Oliver remains hopeful that he will eventually recover the money needed to properly honour his brother’s memory. He urges others who are considering using GoFundMe to be diligent in their selection of organizers and to maintain open communication throughout the fundraising process.
