Four Alberta municipalities – Calgary, Cochrane, Canmore, and Banff – have joined forces to advocate for a crucial passenger rail connection between Calgary and Banff National Park. Through the newly formed ‘Bow Valley Corridor Alliance,’ these mayors are urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to recognize the project as one of national importance and include it within the framework of Bill C-5.

Boosting Tourism and Reducing Congestion

The Bow Valley region is a cornerstone of Alberta’s tourism industry, attracting millions of visitors annually. However, the increasing popularity of the area has led to significant traffic congestion on the Trans-Canada Highway, particularly during peak seasons. “This isn’t just about improving transportation; it's about safeguarding the future of our communities and the incredible natural beauty of Banff National Park,” stated Mayor Jyoti Gondek of Calgary. “A modern, efficient rail system will reduce our carbon footprint, ease traffic woes, and enhance the overall visitor experience.”

Bill C-5: A National Opportunity

Bill C-5, the National Interests Act, provides a framework for identifying and prioritizing projects deemed essential to Canada’s national interest. The Bow Valley Corridor Alliance believes that a Calgary-Banff passenger rail line strongly aligns with this designation due to its significant economic, environmental, and social benefits.
