Calgary, AB – Despite recent efforts to revitalize the area, businesses in the vibrant Marda Loop neighbourhood are still feeling the lingering effects of a year-long construction project. While a meeting with Mayor Jyoti Gondek and a successful street festival offered a glimmer of hope, many owners say they’re facing significant financial challenges and a slow recovery process.

The extensive construction, primarily focused on improving infrastructure and pedestrian walkways along 17th Avenue SW, began in early 2023 and continued through much of the year. While the upgrades were ultimately welcomed as a long-term investment in the community, the immediate impact on local businesses was devastating.

“It’s been a very challenging year, there’s no question about it,” says Sarah Miller, owner of a popular boutique in the area. “The construction made it incredibly difficult for customers to access our store. Parking was a nightmare, and the constant noise and dust were a deterrent. We saw a significant drop in foot traffic and sales throughout the project.”

Many businesses reported losing anywhere from 30% to 50% of their usual revenue during the peak construction periods. Some were forced to cut staff or reduce operating hours to stay afloat. The situation was particularly difficult for smaller, independent businesses that lacked the financial reserves to weather such a prolonged downturn.

The recent Marda Loop Block Party provided a much-needed boost, drawing large crowds and generating some positive momentum. However, owners emphasize that it’s just a temporary reprieve. “The festival was fantastic, we really appreciate the city’s efforts to support us,” says David Chen, owner of a local restaurant. “But it’s not enough to erase the losses we’ve incurred over the past year. We need ongoing support to truly recover.”

The meeting with Mayor Gondek was described as productive, with the mayor assuring business owners that the city is committed to helping them rebound. Discussions focused on potential marketing initiatives, tax relief options, and streamlined permitting processes for businesses looking to expand or renovate. However, specific details and timelines for these initiatives remain to be seen.

Looking ahead, Marda Loop businesses are cautiously optimistic. They recognize the long-term benefits of the infrastructure improvements, but they also acknowledge that the recovery process will be a marathon, not a sprint. A concerted effort from the city, community organizations, and local residents will be crucial to ensuring the continued vibrancy and success of this beloved Calgary neighbourhood.

“We’re resilient, and we’re committed to Marda Loop,” adds Miller. “But we need the support to get back on our feet and thrive once again.”
