BBC

Feeling stressed or anxious? Looking for a fun and accessible way to improve your mental wellbeing? Sport in Mind, a leading mental health sports charity, is offering a fantastic opportunity for residents of Surrey Heartlands – free weekly sports sessions designed to prioritize mental health.

Launched in 2021, Sport in Mind has been steadily growing its impact, and thanks to a recent £73,394 grant from the Mental Health Investment Fund (MHIF) at the start of 2024, they’re expanding their reach even further. This funding is a testament to the importance of integrating physical activity into mental health support.

What's on Offer? These aren't your typical gym workouts! Sport in Mind offers a diverse range of activities catering to different interests and fitness levels. While the specific activities may vary, you can expect options like:

  • Pickleball: A fun and social sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Perfect for all ages and skill levels!
  • Tai Chi: A gentle, flowing exercise that promotes relaxation, balance, and coordination. Excellent for reducing stress and improving mindfulness.
  • And More! Expect a variety of other sports and activities to be added, ensuring there's something for everyone.

Accessibility Across Surrey Heartlands NHS Surrey Heartlands is proud to support this initiative, recognizing the vital role that sport and physical activity play in mental wellbeing. A total of 14 weekly sessions are currently available across the county, making it easy for residents to participate. Check the Sport in Mind website (link below) for schedules and locations.

Why is this Important? It's increasingly clear that mental and physical health are inextricably linked. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, boost self-esteem, and provide a sense of community. Sport in Mind’s sessions offer a supportive and non-judgmental environment where individuals can connect with others, get active, and prioritize their mental wellbeing.
