Fullerton, CA – In a groundbreaking initiative to protect the health and wellbeing of its firefighters, the Fullerton Fire Department is partnering with Providence St. Jude Medical Center to offer comprehensive esophageal cancer screenings to every member of the department. This marks a significant milestone, being the first fire department in California – and potentially the nation – to implement such a widespread screening program.

The reason for this proactive measure lies in the elevated risk of esophageal cancer faced by firefighters. Exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other toxins during firefighting operations has been linked to an increased risk of this aggressive form of cancer. Recognizing this heightened risk, the Fullerton Fire Department sought a way to provide early detection and intervention, potentially saving lives and improving outcomes.

The screening process utilizes advanced technology – specifically, a minimally invasive procedure called Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Screening with Cytology (EASC). This test allows doctors to examine the lining of the esophagus for early signs of precancerous changes or cancer. Unlike some older screening methods, EASC is generally well-tolerated and offers a more accurate assessment of risk.
