After an agonizing 11 days lost in the harsh Australian outback, German backpacker Carolina Wilga has finally been discharged from Perth’s Royal Perth Hospital. The 26-year-old’s incredible survival story captivated the world, and her release marks the end of a difficult chapter, though the road to full recovery continues.

Wilga’s ordeal began on July 21st when she became separated from her tour group while hiking near Mount Augustus, one of Western Australia's most iconic landmarks. Despite dwindling water supplies and the relentless heat, she managed to survive for over a week, relying on her wits and a small amount of food she had with her. Her resilience and determination to stay alive drew international attention, with news outlets worldwide reporting on her plight.

“She’s incredibly lucky to be alive,” stated a spokesperson for Royal Perth Hospital. “The conditions out there are brutal, and to survive for that long alone is a testament to her strength and spirit.” Wilga was eventually found by a search and rescue team on August 1st, dehydrated and suffering from exposure but remarkably alive.
